The Intercultural Drop-In Centre Tallaght took part in the Unwrapped project last Friday 15th of November in preparation of the main event: UNWRAPPED ’19 Lantern Parade is on Saturday 7 December. 4.45 pm-6pm.
UNWRAPPED’19 is going to be a special event. Our title is Safe Passage – Safe Haven. It takes as its theme the migration of peoples across the world and particularly Europe at this time and their search for a new home, a place of safety and a welcome.
Our President Michael D Higgins speaking at the UN Forum recently described ‘migration as central to the Irish consciousness’ adding that ‘ Ireland had been transformed from a place where people were forced to leave, to somewhere that now has the opportunity to be a place of welcomes’.
Unwrapped ’19 – An Invitation to Participate in Lantern Parade
Taking as our inspiration is an award-winning animation by refugee animation artist Majid Adin. Majid Adin won a commission from the Elton John Foundation to reinterpret the song, Rocket Man. Majid worked in partnership with Irish animator Stephen McNally. Together they created a profoundly beautiful and moving film animation about a refugee’s search for safe passage-safe haven. Our Lantern Parade is a variation on the welcome that the traditional candle in windows of Irish homes during Christmas extends to our own returning diaspora and now to new arrivals to Ireland.
The film animation will be screened on the wall of Rua Red, Library Square as the culmination of the UNWRAPPED’19 Lantern Parade event with live choirs and musicians providing the soundtrack.
UNWRAPPED ’19 Lantern Parade is on Saturday 7 December. 4.45 pm-6pm.
